Sustainability
For the International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Multimedia (MUM'24), we are committed to upholding and furthering the sustainability goals achieved at MUM’23 Vienna. Continuing with our dedication to environmental responsibility, we invite all attendees to participate actively in our green initiatives for a more sustainable conference experience in Stockholm.
Travel
Choosing sustainable modes of travel is the most significant impact you can make [1, 2, 3]. Air transport to Stockholm is expected to have the greatest environmental impact, as is the case for most conferences. While train travel to Stockholm is encouraged, planned track maintenance could affect your journey. Detailed information on train travel options is available on the Travel page, however, a suggested itinerary for a train journey is shown below.
If travelling from mainland Europe, consider breaking the journey as follows:
- Travel to Copenhagen
- From Copenhagen, take a regular train to Malmö
- From Malmö, take a direct train to Stockholm
For greater flexibility, an Interrail pass is recommended, along with seat reservations, which are required for the train from Malmö to Stockholm. Travel blogs such as The Man in Seat 61 can be very helpful in learning more about and planning train journeys.
If travelling from Finland, flights may have a lesser environmental impact than taking the ferry. This carbon calculator could provide additional information about the potential impact of your trip - https://travelandclimate.org/
Measuring the Sustainability Impact of the Conference
In this edition of the conference, we aim to collect more data on how participants travel to and from Stockholm through the inclusion of pertinent questions in the registration form. This information will help us better understand the overall sustainability impact of the conference and identify measures we can take to improve future editions.
Experience Stockholm Sustainably
We advocate for the use of reusable and recyclable materials throughout your stay. Please minimize waste and utilize appropriate disposal and recycling bins at the conference and around the city. Our plans are to keep the amount of conference material handed out to a minimum.
- We request that you bring your favourite lanyards from other conferences so that they may be reused. We will also provide reused lanyards at the conference venue for those who need them, which will be collected and reused again by other local conferences. Therefore, we request the return of your badge at the conference's end for recycling and offer a designated return station for this purpose at the registration desk.
- We will offer notepads and pens as needed.
Conference Dining
Our conference will exclusively offer vegetarian and vegan menu options, featuring a selection of seasonal, regional, and organic ingredients, with Fairtrade options where available. Stockholm's renowned tap water will be our primary offering. Catering at the conference will be provided by Fågelägens Catering, whose sustainability policy regarding the food they provide can be read here(link in Swedish). Discover the rich flavours of Swedish cuisine through our carefully selected dishes, including opportunities to explore local culinary traditions beyond the conference.
Public Transport
Stockholm boasts an extensive and efficient public transportation network, offering multiple ways to get around the city. It is recommended to use public transport when getting around the city as it may be both cold and slippery during December. Detailed information on ticket options is provided on the Travel page. All public transport in Stockholm by bus or rail has the Swedish label “Bra miljöval”, meaning that they are entirely fossil-free.
CO2 Compensation
Recognizing the ongoing debate around CO2 compensation, we still believe in the importance of mitigating the environmental impact of travel. We encourage attendees to consider carbon offsetting as a supplementary measure. Below are recommended providers for CO2 compensation:
