Submissions

MUM 2012, the 11th International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Multimedia, will be held on December 4-6, 2012 at Ulm University, Germany.

MUM is a distinguished forum for advances in research and technologies that drive innovation in mobile and multimedia systems, applications, and services. At MUM academics and practitioners gather to discuss challenges and achievements from diverse perspectives, in a single track conference format. This year's conference aims to continue the tradition of innovation and excellence in research established by previous MUM conferences. In addition to the peer-reviewed accepted papers, the conference program will include keynote presentations, posters, demos, an industry track and a doctoral consortium.

Submissions will be handled via the EasyChair Conference System and submission can be made from July on. All submission must follow the ACM Proceedings format ( Word , Latex ). Accepted full and short papers, industry track papers, demos and posters will be included in the conference proceedings published by ACM Press and included in the ACM Digital Library.

We welcome high quality full and short paper submissions that offer an original contributions relevant to the field of mobile and ubiquitous multimedia. Successful full paper submissions typically represent a significant advance for the field. Short papers offer a focused contribution to the research program. Short papers are not work in progress reports but offer completed, rigorously researched/developed work that makes a significant contribution to the field of mobile and ubiquitous multimedia. Short papers are likely to have a smaller scope of contribution than full papers, but they are expected to make a solid contribution to the field. Paper topics could include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Mobile and ubiquitous multimedia applications and systems
  • Mobile user interfaces, interaction design and techniques
  • Mobile games, entertainment and advertising
  • Mobile social network and multimedia services
  • Context-aware and location-based mobile and ubiquitous services
  • Mobile Augmented Reality systems and applications
  • Architectures, systems and algorithms tackling technical challenges of mobile systems
  • Middleware and distributed computing support for mobile and ubiquitous multimedia
  • Tools and development systems for building mobile and ubiquitous multimedia systems
  • Case studies, field trials and user experience evaluations of new applications and services
  • Social and privacy implications of mobile and ubiquitous multimedia systems

We welcome submission of high quality papers, either in full paper format (max 10 pages ACM format ) or short paper format (max 4 pages ACM format ), that describe original and unpublished research advancing the state of the art in mobile and ubiquitous multimedia. Papers should be grounded in existing mobile and ubiquitous multimedia literature and knowledge, and should be written for an interdisciplinary mobile and ubiquitous multimedia audience.

Submissions should not have been previously published or be concurrently under submission elsewhere. Papers must be anonymized (remove author and institutional identities, acknowledgement) and must contain an abstract that is less than 150 words long that clearly states the paper's contribution to the field. Submitted PDFs must be no larger than 10 megabytes. Authors are encouraged to submit an illustrative video (max 20 megabytes) to accompany their paper and to demonstrate their system at the conference. Papers must be submitted via EasyChair.

All full and short paper submissions have to be registered by Friday, August 31, 23:59 (EDT). This means authors, paper title, and abstract have to be entered into the submission system by then. The submission itself can be still modified and the PDF has to be uploaded till Thursday, Sept 6, 23:59 (EDT).

Submitted papers will undergo a rigorous review process, managed by the Technical Program Chairs. Final camera-ready versions of accepted papers must be accompanied by a signed copyright form. Accepted full and short papers will be included in the conference proceedings.

Industry Track Papers

The Industry Track is targeted towards practitioners and professionals working in the field of mobile and ubiquitous multimedia. Industry Track papers should show the application, commercial aspects and practical challenges in the areas listed in the call for papers for full and short papers. Of special interest are also real-world examples that illustrate, e.g.: experiences in deploying and running such systems, lessons learnt in developing such systems and differences between research and practice.

The difference to the full and short papers in the scientific track is in the practical, rather than strictly scientific, nature of the submissions. We welcome submission of high quality papers, either in full paper format (max 10 pages ACM format ) or short paper format (max 4 pages ACM format ). Papers should be written for an interdisciplinary mobile and ubiquitous multimedia audience.

Demos

The MUM 2012 Demonstrations track provides an opportunity to present a hands-on demonstration of your work, research, service, prototype or product addressing one or more of the suggested topics in the general call for participation for full and short papers. We want to see and try your prototypes, services, devices, systems and any innovative example of mobile and ubiquitous multimedia. We encourage making your demonstration visually or otherwise appealing and presenting it in an innovative way in order to attract the participation of attendees.

Demonstration submissions should have 2-4 pages ( ACM format ) and they should be accompanied by a one page specification of the infrastructural requirements. Demo submissions must be anonymized (remove author and institutional identities, acknowledgement) and must contain an abstract that is less than 150 words long that clearly states the demo's contribution to the field. Submitted PDFs must be no larger than 10 megabytes. Authors are encouraged to submit an illustrative video (max 20 megabytes) to accompany their demo paper. Demos must be submitted via EasyChair.

Submissions will undergo a review process managed by the Demo Chairs. Final camera-ready versions of accepted papers must be accompanied by a signed copyright form. Accepted demo papers will be included in the conference proceedings.

The Demonstrations Chairs will investigate infrastructure and equipment possibilities for the accepted demonstrations. Participants are expected to bring the necessary equipment to the conference site with them. Demonstrations will be presented during the demo sesstion at the conference.

Posters

The MUM 2012 Poster track provides an opportunity for researchers and practitioners to show and discuss novel mobile and ubiquitous multimedia services, interactions and systems that have not been fully designed, implemented or tested but show great promise; provoking topics; preliminary results; summaries of small-scale studies, etc. Topics of interest are the same as mentioned in the CFP for short and full papers. Posters provide the opportunity for researchers to get feedback on early-stage work, discuss potential collaborations and discuss the burning issues in MUM in an informal manner with the larger MUM community.

Poster submissions should have 2 pages ( ACM format ) and they should be accompanied by a first version of the poster. The posters are recommended to be in A0 format (84cm x 119cm / 33 x 47), and must be in portrait orientation. Papers must be anonymized (remove author and institutional identities, acknowledgement) and must contain an abstract that is less than 150 words long that clearly states the poster's contribution to the field. Submitted PDFs must be no larger than 10 megabytes. Posters must be submitted via EasyChair.

Submissions will undergo a review process managed by the Poster Chairs. Final camera-ready versions of accepted papers must be accompanied by a signed copyright form. Accepted posters will be included in the conference proceedings.

Accepted submissions will be presented as a poster at the conference. The posters are recommended to be in A0 format, in portrait orientation. Authors are expected to bring the accepted posters to the conference site with them and be present throughout the poster session.

Doctoral Consortium

Graduate students within different areas of mobile and ubiquitous multimedia are invited to take part in the Doctoral Consortium. This will be the place where lively and useful discussions enable students to receive suggestions about their on-going research and allow more experienced participants to encounter some fresh ideas and view some of the new trends in the field.

The Doctoral Consortium provides an opportunity for doctoral students to discuss their research both with other students and with leading experts within the field. The consortium will take the form of a workshop where established MUM scholars take active part as discussants. The purpose is for students to receive constructive feedback on their thesis work so far, get advice about future developments, and share ideas and experiences with students in related areas. The research areas covered by the DC are the same as the MUM conference generally.

To apply, please submit a proposal of at most 3 pages ( ACM format ). Also, a short biographical note describing the applicant's background should be enclosed - maximum one page. The proposal should include a description of the research problem, the theoretical background and approach chosen, and the work performed so far. Approximately 8 participants will be selected to give a short presentation of their research topic, followed by a discussion within the group of students and experts. Proposals must be submitted via EasyChair.
